Tesla pushes unsupervised FSD to Q2 2027, and only inside Robotaxi zones

Tesla now says unsupervised “Full Self-Driving” in customer-owned cars will arrive in Q2 2027. It’s the latest date on a promise Elon Musk has been making to FSD buyers for the better part of a decade.

But there’s a catch. On Tesla’s Q3 2026 earnings call today, AI chief Ashok Elluswamy described it as owners adding their own vehicles to Tesla’s managed Robotaxi fleet, not owners getting a car that drives them anywhere they want to go.

Panel urges NASA to fetch Apollo 15 poop bags and hardware from moon

Astronaut David Scott moonwalking at Hadley Rille

Astronauts should return to the Apollo 15 landing site on the moon and haul home some of its half-century-old poop and hardware, a panel told NASA on Wednesday.

A crew would land just north of the site at Mons Hadley — far enough away to avoid damaging it. From there, the astronauts would walk over to inspect the rover, lander base, instruments, and power systems the prior crew left behind in 1971.

That equipment has endured decades of space radiation and repeated heating and cooling as lunar days give way to nights. Scientists on Earth could study how the lunar environment impacts the hardware over time. A close look at the urine and feces in a lab could reveal how biological material changes and whether it affects the area around it.

That "would be foundational information [for] how we need to engineer the systems for lunar bases," said Dan Dumbacher, co-chairperson of the committee, "for anything humans take to the surface of the moon."

The mission proposal came from a National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine committee, whom NASA asked to recommend future moon-landing sites away from the lunar south pole, where the agency already intends to build a long-term moon base. In a new report, members of the committee selected four non-polar sites — Bhabha Crater, Mons Hadley, Orientale Basin, and Aristarchus Plateau — where they believe Artemis astronauts should collect samples, make observations, and conduct experiments. They prioritized locations they believed would benefit from human explorers over uncrewed robots.

These so-called "sorties," the term NASA used when tasking the committee, would be short, one-time visits. Because the poles lack the volcanic terrain found elsewhere on the moon, as well as radioactive metals like uranium and thorium, the brief trips would complement the base, not replace it, according to the report.

Each mission would send a pair of astronauts to make one to four moonwalks within 2 kilometers — or 1.2 miles — of their lander. That distance is a previously established "walkback" limit NASA decided long ago that the committee thinks the agency should try to extend. The panel also chose landing sites that offered the most opportunities for geology, biology, human health, and physics research.

The top pick, Bhabha Crater, sits inside what may be the solar system's largest and oldest crater, and its rocks could pin down when that massive impact happened. Situated on the far side of the moon, the crew would have to land farther from home than any humans before, letting NASA test how astronauts cope with isolation.

The site is also prime for a telescope, said James Day, the other chairperson of the committee.

"It's an almost unmatched location for doing radio astronomy, and the reason for this is because it's in the quiet zone on the far side of the moon. It is shielded from the noise that we produce here on Earth," Day said. "This will give us information on the very early universe before the first stars or galaxies had formed."

At Orientale, the moon's youngest large basin at roughly 3.8 billion years old, astronauts would collect boulders from deep in the crust that could show whether the moon was once entirely molten. They would also set up a detector for gravitational waves — ripples in spacetime. The instrument could alert astronomers months before distant neutron stars collide, the committee leaders said.

Finally, the Aristarchus Plateau, an Apollo destination that NASA never reached, holds volcanic deposits that may yield water. It spans about 60 miles, so crews there would gain the most from the simple open rover the committee thinks NASA should build.

Among its recommendations, the panel said NASA should keep mapping the moon in detail from orbit, build instruments that can run through the lunar night, and set up a communications system that keeps crews in constant contact with Earth, even on the far side.

NASA will decide when and in what order to fly the missions.

"All four of these sites will give us profound knowledge," Day said, "not just of our moon, but of our solar system, and frankly of ourselves."

Does the iPhone Duo Run Hot? Here's What Reviews Found

Multiple iPhone Duo reviews covered the device's thermal properties, and reviewer opinions varied. Some found that it was just warm, while others thought it was running too hot at times.

Joanna Stern said the back of the device got warm when using FaceTime and taking photos. She had to end a ‌FaceTime‌ call during testing because it got too hot. "Yeah, I'm gonna burn my hand off," she said. "This thing is getting really warm."

Apple told her the warmth was a sign of the iPhone Duo's thermal design moving heat away from the chip to keep performance up. "But to me, it just feels like the phone is really warm," she said.

The ‌iPhone Duo‌ has the same custom vapor chamber setup and A20 Pro chip as the iPhone 18 Pro, but the vapor chamber is thinner. Apple added a flexible graphite pipe in the hinge to transfer heat between the two halves, giving more surface area for heat dissipation.

The Verge said the ‌iPhone Duo‌ heats up when using the camera for a long time, especially if both displays are on for features like Duo Preview. "You can just feel the phone getting significantly hotter when this happens," reads the review. "The phone gets hot enough to start noticeably lagging after a while." The site also said it gets hot when running third-party apps, particularly video apps and apps from Google.

PetaPixel's review unit got warm when gaming, photo editing, or doing anything that stressed the processor, with the heat felt on the right side of the unfolded device.

Mrwhosetheboss did a 20-minute stress test with the ‌iPhone Duo‌ and ‌iPhone 18 Pro‌ Max. He found the ‌iPhone Duo‌ trapped heat inside when it was closed, and ‌iPhone Duo‌ performance was below the ‌iPhone 18 Pro‌ Max. When open, the ‌iPhone Duo‌ has a large high-resolution display that also affects performance. Mrwhosetheboss focused more on performance than heat, and said the difference between the ‌iPhone Duo‌ and ‌iPhone 18 Pro‌ Max isn't "massively" noticeable in day-to-day use.

HTX Studio did a 30-minute gaming test with the ‌iPhone Duo‌ and ‌iPhone 18 Pro‌ models. The ‌iPhone Duo‌ was 46.5°C, while the ‌iPhone 18 Pro‌ and Pro Max were at 43.8°C and 43.2°C, respectively. The ‌iPhone Duo‌ had a 20 percent lower frame rate than the ‌iPhone 18 Pro‌ models and it couldn't maintain 300 nits brightness, dropping to 185 nits.

9to5Mac said the ‌iPhone Duo‌ "runs a bit hotter than the ‌iPhone 18 Pro‌, but not in a way that impacts performance." Tom's Guide did a benchmark heat test and found that the ‌iPhone Duo‌ was able to spread heat evenly across the body of the device, but it was a few degrees hotter than the Galaxy Z Fold8 the site compared it to. The ‌iPhone Duo‌ scored 75.9 percent stability score on the 3DMark stress test, compared to 79 percent for the ‌iPhone 18 Pro‌ Max and 72 percent for the Z Fold8.

Gizmodo didn't find heat to be a problem, saying the vapor chamber "does a solid job cooling it down to prevent lag or slowdown" when apps use "all the CPU and GPU cores."

The ‌iPhone Duo‌ launches this Friday, so we don't have long to wait to see if heat is going to be a problem for the everyday user.

Survey: Enterprises waste 28 percent of software budgets on unwanted upgrades

Enterprise-sized businesses spend, on average, 28 percent of their software budgets on unwanted upgrades, migrations, and licensing changes. Often, those firms' IT heads think those changes are detrimental.

Those results are according to a survey of 2,018 chief information officers and senior IT decision-makers at companies with at least 10,000 employees that Origina commissioned for its report, “The Software Tax.” About half of the respondents (1,011) are from the US, and the rest are from the United Kingdom. All respondents worked at companies with at least $1 billion in annual revenue.

Keep in mind that Origina provides maintenance for various enterprise software. Its report points to independent software maintenance as a way for IT leaders to regain control over software budgets, illustrating its potential bias. A third-party research consultancy, Censuswide, conducted the survey.

Tesla profits drop 43% in Q3

Tesla published its third-quarter 2026 financial results this afternoon. Earlier in October, it reported its sales and deliveries for the three-month period, selling fewer cars than in the same quarter in 2025, yet it still beat analyst projections. Now we can see how those sales translate to the bottom line. Tesla brought in $28 billion in revenue in Q3, almost the same as in 2025.

Automotive revenues were $20.6 billion, a 3 percent decrease year over year. Perhaps more troubling is the decline in revenue from solar panels and storage batteries—this line of business had been growing, but for Q3 revenue fell 16 percent year over year to $2.9 billion. Services and other revenues, though, which include parts and Supercharger use, grew by a third to $4.6 billion.

But the company—like the rest of us—has seen its expenses go up. Operating expenses rose by 39 percent to $4.8 billion, dropping the company’s operating margin to just 2.6 percent; in Q3 2025, Tesla’s margin was 5.8 percent. Net profit fell to $787 million, down 43 percent year over year. What’s more, capital expenditures were up by 110 percent to $4.7 billion, and free cash flow was down 62 percent to $1.5 billion.

Tesla energy revenue drops 16% as it refunds customers over tariffs

Tesla’s energy business deployed more batteries in Q3 2026 but brought in less money. Energy generation and storage revenue fell 16% year-over-year to $2.88 billion, even though storage deployments rose 10% to 13.7 GWh.

Tesla’s shareholder letter blames the drop “partially” on “tariff-related customer refunds.” It doesn’t say how much it refunded, to which customers, or why it was accounted for as reduced revenue.

Tesla FSD ‘subscriptions’ hit 1.74M, counted the way Musk’s pay package wants

Tesla says it now has 1.74 million active “Full Self-Driving” subscriptions, up 67% from a year ago. A footnote in its Q3 2026 shareholder letter explains how it gets there: the metric follows “our 2025 CEO Performance Award” and “includes both upfront payment and monthly subscriptions.”

So owners who bought FSD outright, some of them years ago, count as subscribers. That matters because 10 million active FSD subscriptions is one of the milestones Elon Musk has to hit to earn his 2025 pay package. It also matters because hundred of thousands of those FSD “subscribers” were sold unsupervised self-driving, which Tesla has yet to deliver.

Tesla blames battery supply for flat sales, but its prices keep falling

Tesla says battery supply, not demand, is what’s holding back its car sales. In its Q3 2026 shareholder letter, the automaker wrote that “battery availability continued to be the limiting factor in increasing auto volumes in the quarter.”

It also claims it ended Q3 with “the largest backlog for our passenger vehicles in four years.” But the numbers in the same letter don’t line up with a company that has more buyers than cars.

iPhone Duo Has 'Edge Light' Feature That Debuted on Macs Last Year

As noted by Miles Franklin, the iPhone Duo's inner display supports Edge Light, an optional setting that debuted on Apple silicon Macs last year. On video calls in apps like FaceTime, Edge Light illuminates the borders of the screen to evenly illuminate your face in low-light conditions. The feature is essentially a virtual ring light.

What 32,000 Folds Did to the iPhone Duo's Hinge

Apple hasn't shared iPhone Duo hinge tests or given a lifetime fold number like Samsung, but Joanna Stern used a custom device to subject her review unit to more than 32,000 folds over four nights.

Over the course of the testing, Stern said she thought it might be feeling looser as the number of folds increased, but her final conclusion was that she couldn't feel much of a change. A calibrated push-pull gauge used to take readings before and after the Duo fold test showed the hinge was actually stiffer than before.
But in everyday use, I really couldn't feel a difference. So, after 32,000 folds, it felt pretty much the same as day one, which is pretty darn impressive.

Stern didn't comment on whether the fold test caused the crease to be more visible, which can happen over time with other foldable devices. Her testing was done with a case on, and while the machine opened the Duo flat, it didn't close it all the way each time.

Samsung's foldable displays undergo official testing, and in 2025, the display used for the Galaxy Z Fold7 passed a 500,000-fold durability test. Samsung Display says that translates to over 10 years for average users folding their device about 100 times a day, or over six years for users who fold it more than 200 times daily.

Until Apple shares information on display and hinge durability, Stern's test is all we have to go on. It's unlikely to be the last unofficial folding stress test that we see over the next few weeks.

The full details on Stern's machine, including how it was built, can be found in her YouTube video, and she has more information in her review writeup.

The new human-crafted Apple Music brand matters in an AI world

Apple just revealed a new brand identity for Apple Music, with the expected turn to Liquid Glass. I’m not much of a fan of their new design language in general; this is where I admit that I’m still running MacOS Sequoia and have grumpy things to say about rounded corner radii and text legibility.

It’s just a trend, it will pass, and at some point I’ll probably cave and upgrade when it starts actually affecting my ability to get work done, or more importantly get security updates. Once I adjust, I’ll stop noticing it, and life will go on.

As such, I wouldn’t normally find an obvious rebrand like this notable, much less feel like I had much to say about it. But then I happened to catch Apple’s behind-the-scenes video in my YouTube recommendations, and I realized I did have thoughts.
