As Reddit stock falls, CEO questions value of Google's AI Overviews

Like any company, Reddit reports quarterly earnings, and its CEO, Steve Huffman, addresses investors during those reports. It's not always about just sharing numbers, though: This quarter, Huffman took the opportunity to voice concerns and criticisms about Google's AI Overviews feature, which automatically summarizes search results on most user queries.

First, there was a letter to investors, wherein Huffman spun his narrative about Reddit's value proposition and general strategic direction amid the proliferation of AI tools.

Reddit keeps its strange DMCA fight over Google search results alive

On Friday, a judge largely denied a motion to dismiss from a web scraper, SerpApi, which is accused of conspiring with Perplexity AI to illegally scrape copyrighted Reddit content from Google search results.

In his opinion, US District Judge Paul A. Engelmayer said that at this early stage, Reddit has plausibly pleaded that there was a conspiracy, with SerpApi providing a product to circumvent Google access controls and Perplexity AI paying for it.

Engelmayer’s decision came less than two weeks after another court dismissed a similar action raised by Google, finding that the company had not proven that rights holders, such as Reddit, had ever authorized the search engine to prevent the scraping of protected content. Google told Ars that it planned to amend its complaint to keep its lawsuit alive, but SerpApi told Ars that Google and Reddit were both trying to β€œuse the DMCA to wall off the open Internet by retroactively claiming control over content that they didn’t author and don’t own.”

Old Reddit Now Requires Logging In

Scharon Harding (Slashdot):

Reddit will start requiring people to be logged into Reddit to use old.reddit.com.

The new requirement will take effect β€œover the next month,” a Reddit employee going by the username boat-botany announced on the social media platform today. The person claimed that the change is part of an ongoing effort to β€œtighten how automated systems access Reddit.”

[…]

Perhaps more alarming for old-school Redditors is that boat-botany’s post left the door open for Reddit retiring old.reddit.com.

Nick Heer:

β€œNew” Reddit is a janky, slow, bloated mess of a website that mostly displays text, images, and videos. β€œOld” Reddit is ugly but functional.

Previously:

Update (2026-07-24): Cole Kurashige (Hacker News):

New Reddit will not load anything more than the post itself without Javascript (JS).

[…]

Cynically, it seems like Reddit discovered they can make scraping harder by making your browser load more and work more, which they had already done by rewriting a nice piece of HTML into a 5x more bloated mess of web components or whatever.

spacecowgoesmoo:

Based on other’s people reports, it seems like Reddit might be requiring auth now [for RSS].

Why Reddit blocked my daily visit to its mobile website

I've recently developed a daily habitβ€”perhaps one I should cut back onβ€”of visiting several subreddits to keep up on things like audio production and the Russian invasion of Ukraine. But I was surprised this weekend to suddenly find myself cut off; Reddit simply would not let me visit the site on my mobile phone.

Instead, a new overlay popped up, saying, "Get the app to keep using Reddit."

There was no way to skip, bypass, or close the overlay. It did not provide any instructions or alternatives for continuing to use the mobile web version. What it did offer was a large button I could press to get the app. If I did so, the overlay told me, I would be able to "search better" and "personalize your feed"β€”two things I don't care to do.
