Not sold on Tesla Powerwall? There are great battery alternatives out there [update]

Between increasingly extreme weather, rising electricity demands, and the rapid expansion of data centers, energy independence is starting to look less like a talking point for doomsday preppers and more like sound planning. That shift in thinking is driving more homeowners than ever towards solar-plus-battery energy solutions like the industry-leading Tesla Powerwall – but Powerwall isn’t the only game in town, anymore.

UPDATE 05OCT26: added the EcoFlow DELTA Pro.

Tesla’s solar factory dragged into patent war between Chinese suppliers

Tesla’s planned solar factory in Texas has landed in the middle of a US patent lawsuit between two Chinese solar equipment makers, both chasing the ingot-growing furnaces Tesla needs to hit its 100 GW goal.

Linton Crystal Technologies, a Rochester, New York company wholly owned by China’s Dalian Linton, sued Zhejiang Jingsheng in a Texas federal court last week. Chinese industry reports say Jingsheng won a roughly 3 billion yuan (about $420 million) Tesla order for crystal pullers earlier this year.

Survey rewind: how much pain at the pump will it take to switch to EV? [update]

Back in April, we ran a sidebar survey about how much Electrek readers think gas would need to cost to convince the most dedicated anti-EV hysterics to switch to a plug-in car. After receiving over 2,800 responses, here’s what you told us.

UPDATE 26SEP2026: a gallon of BP ultimate 93 octane is $7.19 in Chicago.

Electric cars and solar are the hedge against this out-of-control energy crisis

A drone strike shut down Saudi Arabia’s East-West oil pipeline this week, knocking roughly 5 million barrels a day offline. That’s about 5% of global supply, and it pushed Brent crude above $104. US diesel is at record highs.

That’s the fossil fuel crisis making headlines. The quieter one is on your own utility bill, and it’s not getting better either.

Answering random Redditor’s questions with professional backup: home solar edition

Earlier this week, a home solar shopper took to Reddit looking for a home solar panel + home backup battery system that could intelligently manage solar and grid power, auto switch in a power outage, and accept ICE generator input in a prolonged grid power failure. I reached out to some home energy experts to get them an answer.

Tesla killing Solar Roof is leaving installers with six-figure losses

Tesla’s abrupt decision to kill its Solar Roof has left the third-party contractors who sold and installed the product absorbing the fallout — including some who told Electrek they sank hundreds of thousands of dollars into the program and now have little to show for it.

Tesla stopped supplying the solar tiles in August, notifying its network of certified installers that it would ship only conventional solar panels going forward.

Never-Before-Seen Vortices Are Swirling Across the Sun

Tiny Vortices on the SunThe world’s largest solar telescope and advanced computer simulations revealed vortices that are reshaping our understanding of the Sun. Across the Sun’s visible surface, hot plasma is constantly rising, cooling, and sinking. At the edges of these churning regions, researchers have now resolved tiny swirling structures that may help explain how the Sun twists, stores, [...]

Musk’s Terafab chip plant will run on gas, not Tesla solar

SpaceX confirmed it will power Terafab, its $16.8 billion chip megafactory in Texas, with its own natural gas power plants and “very large battery arrays.” Tesla solar isn’t in the plan.

That’s despite Tesla being a partner on the project, and despite Tesla selling solar panels, Powerwalls, and grid-scale batteries built for exactly this kind of load.
