Massive 23,000-pound magnetic core fuels world’s most advanced fusion system revival

A massive magnet that crossed the Atlantic Ocean has brought one of America’s most ambitious fusion projects a step closer to reality. The U.S. Department of Energy’s Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory recently received the central magnet bundle for its upgraded spherical tokamak, a compact fusion system designed to test technologies that could shape future power plants.

The delivery marks a critical milestone for the machine’s return to operation. Engineers now enter the final stages of assembly before experiments resume in 2027.

Manufactured by Spain-based Elytt Energy, the component traveled from Bilbao to New Jersey aboard a cargo aircraft before making its final trip by flatbed truck to Princeton. Weighing 23,000 pounds and stretching roughly 20 feet long, the bundle ranks among the most important pieces of the fusion device.

Dave Micheletti, associate laboratory director for engineering and project director, called the arrival “a truly momentous occasion.” He said the team will now focus on completing assembly and preparing the system for scientific use.

Magnetic core

The central bundle combines two critical magnet systems into a single structure. The toroidal field magnets generate the primary magnetic fields that confine the plasma. Meanwhile, the ohmic-heating system drives electrical current through the plasma to raise temperatures and support confinement.

Building the assembly required a complex manufacturing process. Technicians joined 36 copper conductors, each measuring 19 feet long, using fiberglass tape, resin, and vacuum-pressure impregnation techniques.

Engineers then wrapped additional copper coils around the structure to create the ohmic-heating system. They sealed the completed assembly with insulating resin to withstand demanding operating conditions.

Once installed, the magnets will create two magnetic field configurations inside the apple-shaped vacuum vessel. Together, they stabilize and heat the plasma needed for fusion experiments.

Testing future reactors

Researchers believe spherical tokamaks could offer advantages over conventional designs. Their compact shape may improve efficiency while reducing construction and replication costs. The upgraded system will help scientists evaluate whether the approach can support future commercial fusion plants.

The machine also supports broader national goals. Researchers plan to gather operational data that could train artificial intelligence tools capable of improving fusion performance and control strategies.

Jonathan Menard, the laboratory’s deputy director for research, said the facility will provide new opportunities for scientists and engineers entering the field. He encouraged researchers worldwide to use the platform to advance fusion science.

Final assembly begins

Engineers have already positioned the magnet bundle near the fusion device using heavy-duty cranes. Over the coming months, teams will rotate the structure upright and prepare it for installation. Workers will lower protective shielding around the assembly before placing it inside the machine’s interior.

Technicians must still connect dozens of flexbus components, cooling lines, and internal systems. They will also complete bakeout procedures and commissioning tests to verify that all systems operate together safely.

Steven Cowley, the laboratory’s director, said the upgraded machine possesses capabilities unavailable elsewhere. He noted that the project could play an important role in determining the future direction of commercial fusion research.

If the remaining work proceeds as planned, the upgraded facility could begin experiments in 2027, giving American researchers a powerful new platform to explore the promise of fusion energy.

The arrival of a 23,000-pound central magnet moves a next-generation fusion device into its final assembly phase.

Written by Catherine O’Connell-Cooper, APXS Strategic Planner and Payload Uplink/Downlink Lead, University of New Brunswick, Canada

Earth planning day: Friday, June 5th, 2026

In a very broad sense, Curiosity has two modes of doing science – one centred around a defined science campaign (such as the recent boxwork campaign) and the other as we move between campaigns. During a science campaign, with a very defined start and end location, every image and every workspace is carefully choregraphed to make sure we hit all of our science goals for the campaign. This is a lot of pressure!

But in between campaigns, the emphasis moves to driving towards the next major campaign. Our next major stop is the yardang unit, a series of intriguing wind sculpted, pale coloured hills which you can just see in the distance in the cover image for this blog. The rover planners (RPs) sometimes make our drives as long as they can and we drive as far as we can go, other times we stop a little short to look at interesting looking workspaces as we go. As part of the APXS team, I loved being part of the boxwork campaign and getting all the information we needed there …  but as a geologist, there is something very special about this kind of exploring, the sense of being a planetary explorer, ambling along to see what the rocks will show us.

So we continue southwards, trundling over laminated bedrock which varies from predominantly pale coloured laminated bedrock to bands with abundant thin flaky, darker coloured, layers and patches. Some of the rocks stick out at strange angles, which make planning drives more challenging. This past week there has been abundant dark layers interbedded with the more dominant pale coloured rock, both in place and in fragments around the workspace. APXS and MAHLI characterized some of this darker material, for example at “Rio Bio Bio” and “Placilla de Caracoles” and some of the paler material at the brushed targets “La Primavera” and “Los Quemados.” ChemCam also analyzed both types of rocks along the way.

We are busily acquiring Mastcam and ChemCam LD-RMI (“Long Distance Remote Micro Imager”) images of everything even remotely interesting – and there are lots and lots of cool features around here. The wide open landscape here allows us to image features from several different angles and distances, such as “Mira Flores,” a small erosional outlier seen from a distance in this image and closer up here. Another great example is the “Kimsa Chata” trough which shows some amazing sedimentary structures, which may help us to determine if this was a desert or a lake or maybe something in between, such as a desert with some water moving through.

The Environmental Theme Group continues to populate each plan with environmental monitoring activities. Activities varied from dust devil monitoring in Gale crater to looking at levels of dust in the skies overhead. The weekend drive is planned to take us further into that drive distance shown in the cover image, to an area where the contrast between dark and light bedrock is more pronounced, and just beyond that, to an area which looks very smooth, with no jutting out blocks. From where we sit today, its impossible to say what it is but that is the fun of exploring – who knows what we will find? Stay tuned to find out over the coming weeks.

Schrödinger’s Cat Gets Stranger: Physicists Demonstrate Quantum States No One Has Seen Before

Quantum mechanics defies classical intuition, most famously through Schrödinger’s cat, where systems exist in superpositions of opposing states. Such superpositions are central to quantum technologies. Quantum ‘cat’ states have been realized in harmonic oscillators, but implementations were largely limited to Fock, displaced, or Gottesman-Kitaev-Preskill states. A different class of macroscopic superpositions, where an oscillator is squeezed along orthogonal axes so that its positional variance is simultaneously larger and smaller than the Heisenberg limit, was proposed previously but remained unrealized. Saner et al. introduce a trapped-ion hybrid spin-oscillator system enabling an experimental realization of these ‘siblings’ of Schrödinger’s cat. Image credit: Saner et al., doi: 10.1103/k1xk-yt42.

Physicists at the University of Oxford have engineered a new class of ‘cat states’ -- quantum superpositions constructed not from ordinary wave packets, but from deeply exotic, nonclassical components -- opening unexpected paths toward more resilient quantum computers.
