Termin
Dark Matter (Staffel 2): Die gefeierte High-Concept-Science-Fiction-Serie kehrt zurück. 28. August

[Update: See the retraction below.]
On the web, if I build something that works within the standards, it works. Whether people use it is up to them. On iOS, there is another question entirely: whether Apple decides it should exist.
[…]
In the past couple of years I’ve built three apps that were rejected from the App Store on various grounds.
[…]
A while ago I tried to submit an iOS app for Dark Hours, my astronomy website for normal people. It was rejected on the grounds that it was astrology.
[…]
I see countless ChatGPT wrappers with nearly identical icons and eye-watering subscriptions. I see astronomy apps requesting permissions that have nothing to do with looking at the night sky. My kids download games that interrupt play every few minutes to advertise the developer’s other subscription apps, each with their own $20–50 yearly plans.
Via John Gruber (Mastodon, Hacker News):
But if you actually look at Godier’s Dark Hours, for even just a few seconds, it is instantly obvious that it pertains to the science of astronomy and has absolutely nothing — zero, zilch, nada — to do with astrology.
[…]
Godier proceeded through a series of escalations up to the App Review Board and the Review Board responded that they determined the original rejection was valid because, I shit you not, “We understand that the app includes a live tarot reading feature.” Which isn’t even about astrology. It’s straight out of Kafka.
[…]
This isn’t just contrary to the benefit of developers, like Godier. It’s obviously contrary to the benefit of Apple itself, which should not just accept an app like Dark Hours, but celebrate it as an exemplar of the platform.
Mistakes happen. But in a functioning system mistakes get corrected, and mistakes as obvious as this one get corrected almost instantly and include a quick apology for the conflation. The App Store is not a functioning system.

Update (2026-08-10): John Gruber:
To the best of my recollection, this is the first post I’ve retracted in the 24 years I’ve been writing Daring Fireball. I hope it’s the last. I was misled, both overtly and through omissions[…]
[…]
The truth is, the app, as originally submitted by Godier to the App Store (under the name “Asterly”, not “Dark Hours”), was entirely dedicated to astrology, not astronomy, and did in fact include a “Tarot card of the day” feature amongst other occultist horseshit.
[…]
I wrongly took Godier at his word, both in his public blog post and in private iMessage correspondence yesterday, that the rejection wasn’t just merely debatable, but completely and rather preposterously ungrounded. Whether Godier ever submitted a build of “Asterly” to the App Store that contained no occult horseshit and only the hard-science astronomy features that were present in his “Dark Hours” website that was available for the last week, I don’t know. But I have no reason to believe that he did.
[…]
In an uncomfortable exchange between Beher and Godier on Bluesky, Beher pointed out that Godier’s Dark Hours had the same bug as Beher’s that routed people to “random fields in Mexico”. Earlier today, Godier took his web app down and redirected his
darkhours.iodomain to Beher’sdarkhours.app.
I’m really unhappy about this, both for my role in spreading a false story and because I think it will hurt the cause of reforming App Review. I know there are many crazy rejections and have experienced some first-hand. This story was believable because of that well-known history and because Godier didn’t seem like a nobody trying to get attention—he was the developer of another highly regarded app. But now people are going to point to true developer stories and accuse them of being fakes, too.
Terry Godier has just published a so-called “Mea Culpa” blaming Claude for cloning an open source app and denying foreknowledge.
There’s no mention of or apology for how Godier deceived Gruber and the world about the astronomy/astrology App Store submission/rejection.
The blog post essentially confirms that this person cannot be trusted.
Update (2026-08-11): Colin Cornaby:
BOTH projects were generated using Claude. So you have two people - both generating the same app from the same training data - having a public throw down over who copied who.
[…]
The “original” developer does claim to know how to code - which wasn’t clear from my research. That still doesn’t necessarily mean the original app was the source of the training data. They both may be a result of the same training data.
Holy shit, so the “Claude plagiarised an app” story is actually “Claude produced the same app twice when prompted to do so by two separate developers” 😅
It’s not clear to me exactly how much each developer relied on Claude or which training data was used, but I wanted to note this angle of the story.
Update (2026-08-14): Rosyna Keller:
With all this talk of an astrology app being rejected by App Store review I’m reminded there’s still a flat Earth/astrology app on the App Store that actively leaks the location of all of its users.
Gaming subscription services are all the rage now, but Apple Arcade isn’t a little different from the likes of PlayStation Plus, EA Play, or Xbox Game Pass. If you’ve got questions about it, we’ve got plenty of answers.
Updated August 7, 2026: There are four new games on the service again this month: Everyday Puzzles: Mini Games+, Madden NFL 27 Arcade Edition, Retro Bowl College+, and Water Sort Puzzle: Get Color+.
Apple Arcade is a gaming subscription service for iPhone, iPad, Mac, and AppleTV that features several hundred games. The games are a mix of genres and styles, and include original games you’ll only find on the service and others that can be found on the regular App Store or even other platforms. Apple Arcade isn’t a streaming service like Xbox Live Cloud Gaming or GeForce NOW. Games must be downloaded onto your device in order to be played.
Apple Arcade was made available as part of iOS 13, iPad OS 13, tvOS 13, and macOS Catalina or later. Some of the more visually-intensive games may only run well on newer hardware, though, and some Mac games require macOS 11 (Big Sur).
Apple Arcade costs $6.99/£6.99 per month, and you’ll also get a one-month free trial or you can get three months free if you purchase a new iPhone, iPad, Apple TV or Mac. To claim your free trial click here.
You can get Apple Arcade for less than $6.99 a month if you subscribe for a year upfront. A year of Apple Arcade is $49.99/£49.99 (so $4.16 a month). If you’re currently on the $6.99 month-to-month plan and want to switch to the annual plan and save some money, you can do so on your iPhone or iPad. Open the App Store app, then tap your account icon in the upper right. Tap Subscriptions, then tap the entry for Apple Arcade. Here, you can switch to the annual plan.
Apple Arcade is also included in the Apple One subscription bundles, which range from $20 a month to $38 a month and include access to Apple Music and Apple TV and iCloud storage. There is also a month free trial of Apple One. To claim the trial, or sign up for Apple One, click here.
There isn’t an Apple Arcade app—it’s built into the App Store. On your iPhone, iPad, or Mac open the App Store and look for the Apple Arcade tab at the bottom of the screen (or in the left column on macOS). A sign-up screen with a Try It Free button will appear. After the trial you’ll be charged either the monthly or annual fee, depending on your selection. When subscribing, you’ll need to enter your Apple ID password or use Touch ID or Face ID to sign in, and you’ll have to confirm your subscription purchase a few times.
Once you’re done with the sign up, the Arcade section of the App Store shows what games are available to you. To access a game, tap on it in the App Store, then tap the Get button. When the game is done installing on your device, the Get button turns into a Play button, and you can tap it to launch the game. The game app icon will also appear on your device’s Home page.
On the Apple TV, there actually is an Arcade app. Open that to see the sign-up offer. You’ll also find an Arcade tab within the App Store.
Yes. One $6.99 per month subscription can be shared between up to six people (including you).
First off, keep in mind that if you cancel Apple Arcade (either before your free trial is up or after subscribing), you won’t be able to keep playing the games unless you re-subscribe. If you’re okay with that, you can use the same process you use to cancel any other subscription service. Here’s the easiest way to do it on the iPhone and iPad:
And here’s how to cancel Apple Arcade on the Mac:
No. In Apple’s words, “since every game includes access to the full experience, including all game features, content, and future updates, no additional purchases will be required.” Even games that have in-app purchases on the App Store won’t have any in Apple Arcade.
Also no. On a related note, Apple says Apple Arcade has no ad tracking.
No. All Apple Arcade are downloaded.
No, and they’re not really necessary. Like App Store apps, games download quickly and can easily be removed if you don’t want to keep it anymore.
Apple partly envisions Apple Arcade as a way of letting players try out games with more freedom than the App Store currently allows (which is basically none). In Apple’s words, “rather than pay upfront for each game, a subscription to Apple Arcade will give players the opportunity to try any game in the service without risk.”
The service has a free trial, though, as we’ve seen with other Apple subscription services.
No. As with most subscription services, you only have access while you’re a subscriber.
Yes. In additional to traditional MFi (Made for iOS) controllers, you can pair some specific Bluetooth controllers for either PlayStation or Xbox with either your iPhone, iPad, or Apple TV. Since many Apple Arcade games are playable on Mac and Apple TV (where controller support is more common), many games will support them. Some games, especially those that are also available in the broader App Store and only for iPhone or iPad, have no controller support.

Recently Apple relaxed the requirements for MFi controller certification, which may have grown out of the Apple Arcade negotiations.
Games are typically released on the first Friday of each month. There are some rare exceptions.
There are over 200 games available for Apple Arcade, and the list grows all the time.

COMMISSION IMPLEMENTING DECISION of 19.3.2025, Punkt 87, Seite 24

iOS 27 finally delivers Siri AI—a highly capable chatbot with access to world knowledge, personal data, and live web results. Its system-level agentic privileges, paired with its smarts, turn it into an unrivaled tool that can understand and interact with on-screen content across iPhone apps. This helps you execute complex everyday tasks by using just your voice.
Messaging is one of the most common smartphone use cases, and it can feel tiresome at times. Our iPhones buzz whenever we receive a text, which can include long rants, random 2 AM questions, super important updates, and more. To make my life a tad easier, I leveraged the overhauled chatbot’s power and used Shortcuts to make it respond to certain iMessages.
Siri AI has entered the chat.
To replicate the experiences I’m breaking down below, you’ll need an iPhone 15 Pro or a newer model running iOS 27 (currently in beta) with Siri AI enabled. The first, more practical method works on demand inside chats you’re viewing in real time. The automatic mode, on the other hand, can run in the background and autonomously respond to assigned contacts whenever they text you.
While the latter mode can be fun to play around with, I advise you not to keep it enabled at all times. As artificial intelligence and its generated slop take over social media and other digital spaces, maintaining the humanness of online interactions has become more challenging than ever. You probably wouldn’t want a robot to reply to you when texting your friends, and neither would most people.
Manually having Siri AI reply to specific conversations doesn’t require any setup beyond enabling the chatbot itself. The feature works across first- and third-party messaging apps, allowing you to generate contextual replies in any text box.
For example, a friend asked me for Apple Arcade game recommendations, but I haven’t been playing any lately. I clarified that, then proceeded to ask Siri to answer his question. The AI assistant automatically scoured the web and composed a message highlighting some of the popular titles. It even allows you to view its source(s) to ensure its credibility before hitting send. Through this basic, intuitive integration, I was able to help a friend out without leaving the chat.

Foundry
Siri AI’s usefulness in chats can go even further. I sent a paragraph copied from an article highlighting an iCloud+ price hike in several countries. My friend inquired about the new pricing, so I asked Siri to answer his question. The chatbot took into account that my friend is based in Türkiye (visible in the chat through the Find My tile), and listed the pricing for this particular country. It understood—without my explicit instruction—that this is the particular information my friend is likely interested in and searched the web for results accordingly.
This deep understanding of the context and contacts’ available data, alongside its ability to browse the web, transforms Siri AI into a genuinely helpful assistant when conversing with others. In the past, such workflows would require jumping between multiple apps and manually hunting for results. That’s no longer necessary.

Foundry
I now often find myself hitting the keyboard’s Write with Siri button (the successor to Writing Tools)—not because I need assistance with typing, but because it can provide the needed information from indexed on-device content and the web. I tend to extract the generated details and reword my responses afterwards to maintain my texting tone and style.

Foundry
If a contact regularly spams you on iMessage while you’re busy tending to other life matters, Siri AI can fully take over the chat and respond on your behalf. Launch the built-in Apple Shortcuts app, which now supports generating shortcuts using natural language. Create a new shortcut by inserting this prompt: “When [contact name] texts me, analyze their message, generate a suitable reply, and send it to them automatically.” This will create an automation that fetches the contents of incoming texts, privately feeds it to Apple’s cloud-based AI models to come up with an appropriate response, and finally relays it to the selected recipient.

Foundry
Unlike the manual mode, the Shortcuts automation works best in iMessage and may not be supported in most third-party instant-messaging apps. Whenever the automation runs, you’ll receive a notification alerting you about the automated reply, which, by default, you can’t review in advance. So, unless you actively visit and read the developing conversation, Siri could be sending the contact all sorts of nonsense AI hallucinations. Worry not, however; the automation, unlike the manual mode, bases its replies on world knowledge and public information. While stress-testing it, I was unable to force Siri AI to leak my sensitive details by having someone ask me personal questions.
I had a lot of fun watching Siri AI automatically come up with all sorts of wacky replies and send them to one of my close friends—but once my tests concluded, I deleted the automation altogether. It’s certainly a cool way to demonstrate how far the virtual assistant has come and how iOS now caters to power users by supporting advanced automations and tools. You wouldn’t, however, want the AI chatbot to continuously send your contacts texts without confirmation.
Conversely, manually having Siri AI assist with responding when receiving particular questions has become an indispensable part of my workflow. It selectively uses AI to fetch the needed information—without turning the conversation into a monotonous wall of text full of em dashes. It also works in texting apps beyond Apple Messages, making it the more practical method. Once iOS 27 rolls out to the public, I see this integration revolutionizing how people text by sparing them from time-consuming tasks, like browsing the web and digging through local files to find answers.
Siri AI did not contribute to this story.

Apple is working on a new feature that will support cross-device copy and paste between iOS devices and Windows PCs.
Microsoft asked for the feature using Apple’s EU interoperability request system for developers, which Apple implemented to comply with the Digital Markets Act. Apple began evaluating the request in March, and on June 26, proposed a project plan.
[…]
Apple proposed a solution that would let an iPhone share and import items from the pasteboard to a paired accessory, like a Windows PC. Apple plans to use a solution similar to the Accessory Notifications option it added for third-party wearables in the EU in iOS 26.5. Users would need to give a paired device one-time permission to paste content from an iPhone.
[…]
Apple says introducing cross-device copy and paste is a significant engineering effort, with work expected to be complete by fall 2027.
I wonder whether Apple will restrict this to the EU.

Apple faces a $32.5 billion lawsuit over how its Photos app scans and stores faces. A federal judge cleared the case to proceed as a class action late last month, allowing millions of Illinois iPhone owners to join.
The case has been years in the making, and Apple has fought to shut it down at nearly every turn. Now it heads back to the court, with the company’s privacy practices on trial.
[…]
Court records have shown that the update applies to users with iCloud Photos turned on. Those accounts also need to use at least 10GB of storage and contain at least 5,000 photos and videos. Plaintiffs say all this amounts to collecting biometric data without consent, putting Apple squarely at odds with Illinois law.
Again, I find it odd that features are apparently gated based on the capacity of your iCloud account rather than the available storage.
The lawsuit accuses Apple of collecting biometric data without user consent in the Photos app, reports The Times. It is alleged that Photos uses facial recognition technology to scan individuals who appear in images, creating a “faceprint” for each person in the photo library.
After collecting enough samples, an algorithm is allegedly used to identify the iPhone user. That data is then stored on the iPhone within the Photos app.
I don’t see what the issue is here. My understanding is that it only uploads vectors after you’ve opted in by enabling iCloud Photos and manually assigning names. Also, the vectors don’t seem like the sort of biometric information that the law was meant to protect.
Assuming things are working properly, what should happen is that the people you have specifically named and the photos you have specifically verified sync their info via iCloud. However, the actual face detection for the rest of the photos is done on a per device basis and is not synced via iCloud, primarily for security/privacy reasons.
So, when you first set up a new device, it will pull down the names and info for the photos where you have identified a particular person, but then it still needs to go through the entire library on-device, identify the faces in each photo, and compare them to the synced information to tell which person is in which photo. So once it’s done, you should end up with mostly the same photos identified as each person, but each device still needs to do its own face detection locally.
It seems like every time you call any major business, institution, facility, government, or corporate office nowadays, you get placed on hold, often for what seems like an eternity. Nobody likes waiting on hold with the annoying and repetitive hold music, but fortunately the iPhone has a wonderful solution to being stuck on hold, called ... Read More

Google Health (previously the Fitbit app) collects fitness, sleep, and wellness data from a connected wearable device. Steps, distance traveled, heart rate, sleep, and more can now be added to Apple Health. As noted on Reddit, some data such as HRV doesn't transfer over.
[…]
Syncing can be enabled after downloading the update by selecting Connections, choosing Apps and services, and then adding Apple Health.
My wife is a longtime Fitbit user. A few weeks ago, some family and friends started a friendly competition to see who could get the most steps. They’re all Fitbit users, too. Then she wanted to start comparing step counts with me, but I have an Apple Watch. I thought this would be no problem because the Health app has a sharing feature, and Fitbit and HealthKit have both been around forever. I was shocked to learn that there has never been any syncing. I don’t really understand the reason for this, as it seems like it would make the Fitbit more valuable.
It looks like the syncing part is now solved, but we still can’t automatically compare our steps. We’ve both tried inviting each other to share step counts and some other metrics multiple times over the last several weeks, and it has never worked. Either the invitation doesn’t arrive or the app just spins forever when trying to accept it.
